THE HISTORY

Once called 'The Inevitable Ship,' the Queen Mary was launched in September 26, 1934. Constructed in Clydebank, Scotland, the ship once held the fastest record for crossing the North Atlantic. The 1,019.5 ft. vessel was built as a glamorous cruise ship, but was turned into a transport ship in World War II carrying 15,000 troops at a time. The Queen Mary was retired in September 19, 1967 after completing 1,001 crossings in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship is now permanently docked at the port of Long Beach, California and has been converted into a hotel.

REPORTED PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Several strange occurrences have been reported onboard the Queen Mary since the vessel has been docked there almost 70 years ago. One such report has included a male apparition walking in the engine room. Many believe it is a ghost of a worker who was killed in the ship while it was still in service. It is believed that the pool area is the most haunted spot on the ship. Reports have included children's laughter, water splashing, wet foot prints on the floor, and apparitions of children. Many believe that it is haunted by two women who drowned there. Several people have seen the apparition of them dressed in their 1930s attire. The most documented sighting of an apparition is a person named John Pedder who was crushed by a steel door below deck. It is possible that over fifty ghosts currently haunt the Queen Mary.

THE INVESTIGATION

At 3:25pm on Saturday afternoon, the Geist Research investigators entered the stern of the ship. The first room we enter was called The Queen Mary Story and D-Deck Exhibits. There the team learned a little about the history of the Queen Mary ship and how it eventually became what it is today.

Approximately 4:07pm, the EMF detector rises to 4.5 ELF in front of the Engine Room sign, which is just outside the Propeller Box room. After moving the EMF detector in the surrounding area, we determined that the fluctuation was coming from the center of the room. This occurrence goes on for approximately two minutes. After that, the EMF spike completely disappeared.

Coincidently, this is the same location where an apparition of a bearded man has been seen lurking in the area. Many believe that the ghost may think that the ship is still operational and continues to do his job. Once a father and son were inside the engine room and heard a sound and saw a guy with a beard and a limp walking towards them. They got frightened and quickly ran away. When they turned around, the man was gone.

When we entered the Engine Room, over eighty pictures and thirty minutes of video tape recorded no unusual phenomenon. With the exception of one photograph that was taken by a Geist Research investigator. At first the image appeared normal, however after further analysis; Geist Research may have captured an image of the bearded man.

Here is the image taken in the Engine Room:

As the team walked away from the Engine Room, the same area where unusually high electromagnetic waves were detected, the temperature meter sudden read an error of "666." We could not find any heaters or vents in the surrounding area. In addition, the same temperature reader did not and so far has not repeated such a reading.

A few feet away from the Engine Room, Geist Research investigator and Lead Director Livi, heard a faint sound of a male giggling behind a turbine. Only the Geist Research investigators were in the surrounding area and none sounded or giggled the same way. The team attempted to recreate the noise, but was unsuccessful. In addition, no EVP was ever recorded.

In a separate level of the ship, the team investigated another Engine Room that is supposedly high in paranormal activity. Sightings of a man named Captain Jones have been seen in the area. During our investigation Geist Research recorded two EVPs of a male screaming, which can be heard in the audio investigation section.

Approximately 5:00pm, Geist Research entered the Boiler Room. This section has virtually been stripped of all its original objects leaving an empty huge space. During our visit, there were several banging sounds coming from all directions. At one instance, exactly after the question "are you at peace here" was asked out loud, a very loud violent bang was heard coming from the roof. We assume that the banging sounds were just standard noises typical of an old ship. Geist Research did manage to record an EVP of a female scream, which can be heard in the audio investigation section.

After the Boiler Room, we continued to monitor for paranormal activity on the ship. Floor by floor we were unsuccessful in recording any unusual activity. Unfortunately, the area that is the most haunted (the indoor pool), can only be entered to those who paid for the haunted ghost tour. The Geist Research investigators purchased these tickets, but were not allowed to stay inside to investigate the area.

At the end of the haunted ghost tour, we ended up in front of the Paranormal Research Center. In this room was a collection of evidence of paranormal activity on the ship ranging from photographs, videos, to eye witness accounts.

OUR CONCLUSION

The electro-magnetic field (EMF) spike that occurred at 4:07pm close the engine room may have been the result of a ghost manifesting. All signs show that this theory may be true do to several key points. Firstly the spike was detected only for two minutes then disappeared completely, which means that it could not have been from a machine that was mounted in the surrounding area. If it was a machine, the spike would have remained in the vicinity. Secondly the spike was in the center of the room and not near the walls or floor that could possibly had machines or wires behind it. Thirdly, the incident occurred in an area known for paranormal activity.

The temperature reader that had an error code of "666" could also have been caused by a paranormal event. Often times in areas with paranormal activity, battery operated machinery malfunction because of the energy of the ghost drains the energy of the machine. A similar event occurred in our Whaley House investigation when one of our digital cameras malfunctioned. As a side note, Geist Research would like to mention that the error that read "666" had nothing to do with any religious significance. It was simply a coincidence.

Overall, we considered the Queen Mary investigation to be a success. We were able to conduct our investigation properly with hardly any distraction from the public. We were however disappointed that we could not investigate the most haunted part of the ship, the indoor pool due to a ghost tour that the hotel had put in place. The Queen Mary definitely has a great history for creating the "perfect" haunted ship. And we here at Geist Research believe this to be true.
